Eric Richmond, Principal, established Flat Rock in the year 2000. An admirer of architect Christopher Alexander, he is recognized for designing buildings which emphasize responsiveness to how a client, family or community will live within a given space. His relaxed, casual designs often reflect the integration of elements from his personal travels and admired references. From the exposed plaster finishes of the Italian country home to the beach culture of Santa Monica; his artistic and innovative designs utilize traditional materials in an edgy contemporary way, while also hinting at the historic vernacular of the client’s chosen setting. Eric received his BA in Architecture, graduating cum laude from the University of WA in 1988. After ten years in the construction industry, he relocated from the Seattle area to Whidbey Island, WA where he currently resides with his family.
